We Are God’s Answer

by Herschel on February 26, 2013

Sometimes, when I’m looking for a fresh perspective on what God is saying to me through His Word, it helps to read a different version of the Bible. Recently, I’ve been reading the gospel of Matthew in The Message. At the end of Chapter 9, a story begins about Jesus going through the countryside preaching and healing, and then there’s the famous verse about Jesus having compassion on the masses because they were like sheep without a shepherd. The chapter ends with Jesus telling his disciples to pray that the Lord will send out workers into the harvest field.

Chapter 10 continues the story; “The prayer was no sooner prayed than it was answered. Jesus called twelve of his followers and sent them into the ripe fields. He gave them power to kick out the evil spirits and to tenderly care for the bruised and hurt lives…” Jesus answered their prayer to send workers into the harvest field by sending them! I had read that passage of scripture many times, but it had never been presented in that way, that Jesus used them to answer to their own prayer! It really struck me that we can be God’s answer to prayer! Think of how many times God has answered your prayer by sending another person to help or encourage you. You can be that answer in someone else’s life.

Years ago, a popular song went, “Jesus is the answer for the world today. Above Him there’s no other; Jesus is the way.” Truly, Jesus is the answer, but we are the vessels, the vehicles, the conduits through which He sends His answers to prayer. What an exciting privilege it is to be used by God as His answers to a lost and lonely world that needs our care.

When we are God’s answers to prayer, the Holy Spirit working through us to meet the needs around us in meaningful ways, that’s when we’re really going to feel the true fulfillment of serving the Lord. Ask God to give you a vision of how you could be His answer to someone’s prayer this week in your family, in your community, or at your workplace and see how empowering, rewarding, and life-changing it will be for everyone involved!
