Background Noise

Nobody Likes Noise Pollution

There’s a commercial out now for a phone that reduces background noise so you’re better able to hear whomever you’re talking to – what a great idea! We also need something to cut down on the background noise in our lives that distracts us from clearly hearing the voice of God. A cacophony of sounds from TV, radio, internet, iPods, cell phones, traffic noise, etc. assaults our physical and spiritual ears. Many people have difficulty dealing with silence and need to fill the air with music or news or their own words. Maybe we need to “unplug” from all these stimuli in order to get our lives back!

We’re constantly bombarded by stimuli that invade our space and draw our attention toward worldly rather than heavenly pursuits. Our environment is full of noise and visual pollution that keep us from hearing God and from seeing what He wants to show us. Listening to the Lord is an important subject in the Bible. Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27) and “Pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them” (Luke 8:18). Throughout scripture, we’re encouraged and admonished to listen to God.

In order to listen to God (or to anyone), we have to set aside time to spend with Him. It needs to be time when we’ve eliminated as many distractions as possible so we can give full attention to Him. Even our prayer time is often filled with our talking to God rather than listening to Him. God speaks to us through “His Word,” the Bible, and we must partake of it daily and then be quiet to allow Him to speak to us from it by His Holy Spirit.

One thing I’ve done this year to cut down on background noise is to stop watching the news so much. I had become a real “news junkie,” but all that information just served to stress me out, worry me or make me angry – it didn’t change me or the world around me. I need to listen to the Lord more. What’s something you could do to cut down on background noise so you could listen more closely to God?
